As of October 14th, 2025, opting to continue with the Windows 10 operating system may not be a wise option for most businesses. Although Microsoft has maintained support for Windows 10 since the 2021 release of Windows 11, on the 14th, Microsoft will no longer release security updates for Windows 10 to fix newfound vulnerabilities. This can be problematic for companies that have sensitive data stored on their devices. Aside from being an important step in maintaining a healthy cybersecurity posture, upgrading to Windows 11 boasts many other benefits, according to Clear Winds Technologies Managed Services Director, Jeff Brunson. Brunson lists the following eight reasons as the most notable:
- Improved Performance: Windows 11 is optimized for newer hardware, offering faster boot times, better battery life, and smoother multitasking performance.
- Enhanced Security: Windows 11 introduces advanced security features such as TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module), which helps prevent firmware attacks and strengthens overall system security. It also includes improved Windows Hello features for biometric login and the hardware-based security of newer systems.
- Modern User Interface: The new, centered Start Menu and taskbar provide a more streamlined, modern user experience. Windows 11 also includes revamped window management with features like Snap Layouts, which makes multitasking easier.
- Improved E-Sports Gaming: With features like Auto HDR and DirectStorage, Windows 11 enhances gaming experiences by reducing load times and improving graphics, making it ideal for gamers.
- Enhanced Virtual Desktops: You can now create and manage multiple desktops with different wallpapers and setups, allowing for better organization and a more personalized workspace.
- Better Support for Hybrid Work: Windows 11 is designed with remote work in mind, offering better integration with Microsoft Teams and enhanced multitasking features, which are useful for professional environments.
- Software and Feature Updates: Windows 11 will continue to receive updates which may not be available to users of older Windows versions like Windows 10. These updates include security patches, new features, and performance improvements.
- Future-Proofing: As Microsoft gradually phases out support for older versions of Windows, upgrading ensures you stay on a supported, stable, and secure platform for years to come.
That being said, it can be a daunting task to upgrade a large quantity of devices to a new operating system. You have to consider the specific hardware your PC has and whether or not it meets the specifications necessary to support it. It is also good practice to backup any critical files or documents to an alternative location to ensure you don’t lose any important information. Overall, the upgrade could prove beneficial to those who want to optimize their device’s performance and maintain a healthy cybersecurity infrastructure. Brunson supports this, saying, “If your system meets the minimum requirements and you are looking to take advantage of the latest features and performance improvements, upgrading to Windows 11 can be a good move.”
